Tired of paying to keep up a pool you no longer use? We can take it out and give you your yard back.

Houston Contracting & Demolition provides pool removal services throughout Houston and the surrounding areas. Our crews handle full pool demolition and partial pool removal. We take out the concrete, haul away the debris, fill the hole, and grade the ground. When we leave, you have flat, usable yard again.

We work on every kind of inground pool. That includes concrete, gunite, shotcrete, fiberglass, and vinyl-lined pools. We own our own excavators, skid steers, breakers, and containers. You do not have to rent a dumpster or hire a second company to haul anything off.

What Is Included in Our Pool Removal Services

Every job we do covers all of the following:

  • A full walk-through of your pool, your yard, and your gate access before we quote
  • Draining the pool responsibly following local city and county discharge guidelines
  • Full swimming pool demolition with careful debris control
  • Partial swimming pool removal with backfill, if that is the better fit for you
  • Hauling away all concrete, rebar, tile, coping, and decking
  • Backfill placed in layers and compacted so the ground stays firm
  • Final grading so water drains away from your house
  • Recycling concrete and metal instead of sending it all to the landfill
  • Cleanup of the whole work area before we leave

We also remove pool decks, retaining walls, spas, hot tubs, and old pool equipment pads. Ask us about those when you call.

Full Swimming Pool Removal or Partial Pool Removal?

This is the first real choice you will make. Here is the plain-English difference.

Partial pool removal means we break up the top few feet of the pool wall. We punch holes in the bottom of the shell so water can drain through. Then we fill the hole with clean fill dirt and compact it. This costs less and takes less time. It works well if you want grass, a garden, a patio, or a play area.

Full pool removal means we take out the entire shell. Every piece of concrete, rebar, and plumbing comes out. Then we backfill with engineered fill and compact it in layers. This costs more. It is the right call if you plan to build on that spot later. A shed, a garage, an addition, or a pool house all need solid ground underneath.

Why Houston Swimming Pools Need Extra Care

Pool removal in Houston is not the same as pool removal in Denver or Phoenix. Our ground and our weather create real problems. Here is what our crews watch for.

Our clay soil moves

Much of the Houston area sits on heavy gumbo clay. This soil swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries out. If a filled pool is not compacted the right way, that ground will settle. You end up with a low, soggy dip in your yard a year later. Worse, poor fill near your house can pull water toward your foundation.

We place fill in layers, usually eight to twelve inches at a time. We compact each layer before adding the next. It takes longer. It is the only way to get ground that holds up in Houston clay.

Our water table is high

This one surprises a lot of homeowners. In many Houston neighborhoods, groundwater sits just a few feet below the surface. A pool full of water stays put because the weight holds it down. Drain that pool at the wrong time, and groundwater can push the empty shell right up out of the ground. It is called hydrostatic pressure, and it can lift a whole gunite pool several inches. That turns a simple job into an expensive mess.

Our crews check the hydrostatic relief valve and open the bottom of the shell before draining. We also watch the weather. We do not drain a pool with heavy rain in the forecast.

Storm season changes the schedule

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Our spring rains are heavy too. Wet ground means our machines can tear up your lawn and driveway. Wet fill dirt will not compact right either.

We plan around this. Late fall and winter are usually the best times for pool removal in the Houston area. The ground is firmer and the schedule is more open. If you need the work done in summer, we can still do it. We just build a little extra room into the timeline for rain days.

Abandoned pools become mosquito problems

A green, standing pool is a mosquito factory. Harris County treats West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses as a real public health issue every summer. Neighbors notice, and code enforcement sometimes does too. If you have an unused backyard swimming pool sitting full of algae, getting it removed solves a health problem along with an eyesore.

We Handle the Permits

Pool removal permit and approval requirements vary by location. We check what applies to your property and handle the permitting process as part of the project.

Properties inside Houston city limits may be subject to sewer disconnection, demolition, fill, grading, and other local requirements. Harris County, Montgomery County, Fort Bend County, individual cities, and some homeowners associations may have their own rules or approval steps.

We handle the necessary permit paperwork and coordinate with the applicable jurisdiction before work begins.

Permit and approval requirements can change. Information on this page is provided for general informational purposes and is not legal advice.

Every Type of Inground Pool

Different pools come apart in different ways. Our crews are set up for all of them.

Gunite and shotcrete pools are the most common in Houston. These are sprayed concrete over a steel rebar cage. They are tough. We use hydraulic breakers to open them up.

Poured concrete pools are heavy and often have thick footings. These usually take a larger excavator.

Fiberglass pools come out as large shell pieces. The shell itself is lighter, but the concrete collar and deck around it still have to go.

Vinyl-liner pools have steel or polymer walls with a concrete bottom. We pull the liner, cut down the walls, and break up the base.

We also remove above-ground swimming pools and the decking built around them. Those jobs are usually quick.

Why Homeowners Call Us

We are a local company. Our shop is on Aldine Westfield Road in Spring, and our crews live in the same towns we work in. When you call, you talk to someone who has driven past your neighborhood.

We own our equipment. Excavators, skid steers, breakers, trucks, and open containers are all ours. You are not paying a markup on rented gear, and you are not renting a dumpster yourself.

Are you fully insured? Yes! Just ask the owner and they can give you all the details.

We protect your property. We lay down mats to protect driveways and lawns. We plan our access route before the first machine rolls in. Most backyard pools require going through a fence or a side gate, and we put those back the way we found them.

We quote straight. Your written estimate lists permits, labor, equipment, fill material, hauling, and disposal. No surprise line items at the end.

We clean up. Our crews sweep the street and blow off the driveway. Your neighbors should not be able to tell we were there.

How Long Does Pool Removal Take?

Most partial pool removals take one to three days on site. Full removals usually run three to five days. Larger pools, tight backyard access, or heavy rain can add time.

The whole project, from your first call to the final walk-through, usually runs two to four weeks. Most of that is permit time, which varies by city and county.

We give you a schedule with your estimate, and we tell you right away if anything changes.

Pool Removal FAQ

How much does pool removal cost in Houston? Cost depends on the size of your pool, whether you want partial or full removal, and how easy it is to get equipment into your backyard. Partial removal costs less than full removal. Call us with a few photos and we will give you a real number.

Do I need a permit to remove my pool? Permit requirements depend on where the property is located and the type of work being performed. Houston-area cities, counties, and other local jurisdictions may have different requirements. As part of our process, we check the applicable permitting requirements and handle the necessary permit paperwork for the project.

Can I build on the spot where my pool was? Only with a full removal and properly compacted engineered fill. If you are planning a shed, garage, or addition, tell us before we quote. Building on a partial fill is not safe.

Will the ground sink later? Not if the fill is compacted correctly. We place fill in layers and compact each one. Skipping that step is the main reason filled pools settle.

Do I have to mention the old pool when I sell my house? A partial pool removal leaves portions of the former pool structure below ground, while a full removal takes out the entire shell. How a previous pool removal should be addressed during a future property sale can depend on the property and transaction. Ask your real estate agent or another qualified professional about any disclosure requirements that may apply.

What happens to all the concrete? We haul it to a licensed facility. Concrete gets crushed and recycled, and we pull the rebar and other metal for scrap.

What is the best time of year to remove a pool? Late fall and winter are usually best in Houston. The ground is drier and firmer, so compaction goes better and our machines do less damage to your yard.
